November TV ratings: KXAN’s still the station to beat

KXAN’s morning team features Amanda Dugan, Sally Hernandez, John Dabkovich and David Yeomans.

KXAN continues to be Austin’s top choice for local TV news, according to the latest Nielsen ratings.

In the November “sweeps” period, the city’s NBC affiliate was home to the No. 1-rated 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. English-language newscasts.

ABC affiliate KVUE placed first at 4:30 a.m. and middays.

Mornings, in particular, were especially competitive, with less than one rating point separating the top three contenders.

“We continue to stand by our commitment to producing in-depth stories in all newscasts and investigating the issues that affect our local community,” KXAN vice president and general manager Eric Lassberg said. “We work as hard as we can to follow up on the tips we receive from the people of Central Texas; please keep them coming because it’s working to get results. The entire KXAN staff is honored to continue being the top choice for local news in Central Texas.”

Looking at national news broadcasts, ABC’s “Good Morning America” is the most-watched network morning show in Austin, while “NBC Nightly News” is the nighttime network newscast of choice here.

In prime time, Fox was the network to beat in Central Texas, followed by NBC, CBS, ABC, The CW and then MyNetworkTV.

CBS’ Stephen Colbert wins the late-night TV race among local viewers, followed by NBC’s Jimmy Fallon and then ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel.

“This win was all about teamwork,” KVUE president and general manager Kristie Gonzales said. “From the producers and staff behind the scenes, to the team you wake up to every morning, each person put their heart and soul into making ‘Daybreak’ the best morning newscast in Austin.”

KVUE also was home to the top-rated midday newscast.

Evenings, KXAN continues to be the station to beat, dominating at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. “KXAN News at 6,” for instance, draws more viewers than the second- and third-place stations combined.

Super Bowl ratings: Austin-area audience topped 600,000

Peyton Manning (Associated Press)

Neither Texas team made it to this year’s Super Bowl – no big shock there – but that didn’t keep Austin-area viewers from tuning in Sunday night.

Overnight Nielsen ratings show 361,000 Central Texas households were watching the Denver-Carolina matchup on local CBS affiliate KEYE at its peak, accounting for a whopping 73 percent of all TV sets in use.

That works out to about 545,000 adults ages 25 and up and 607,000 adults ages 18 and up – two of the demographics advertisers love most.

Factor in viewers gathered at sports bars and parties around town, and those numbers would likely go even higher.

Nationally, the numbers were just as strong, with Super Bowl 50 ranking as the second-best Super Bowl in Nielsen overnight ratings history with 114.4 million viewers.

If KXAN is your choice for TV news, you’re in good company.

Austin’s NBC affiliate was the No. 1 station at 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. during January, according to new ratings data from Nielsen.

ABC affiliate KVUE, meanwhile, was the top choice for news at 4:30 a.m. and middays.

At both 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., KXAN drew more viewers than the second- and third-place stations combined. And with an audience of nearly 60,000 households, KXAN’s 6 p.m. broadcast was the city’s most-watched newscast, regardless of time period, last month.

Other January ratings highlights:

  • NBC’s “Today” is the network morning show to beat and “NBC Nightly News” is the top-rated evening network newscast.
  • NBC and CBS were essentially tied for first place in prime time, followed by ABC, Fox, The CW and then MyNetworkTV.
  • Late nights, NBC’s Jimmy Fallon leads the pack. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel is second and CBS’s Stephen Colbert ranks third.

July TV ratings: KXAN is the station to beat

KXAN's newscasts were No. 1 at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
KXAN’s newscasts were No. 1 at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

In depth. Investigative. And now firmly in the lead.

NBC affiliate KXAN, which has built a reputation in recent years for its investigations and special reports, was the station to beat in July, with the top-rated 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts in Central Texas, according to Nielsen.

Last July, the story was much different, with KVUE leading in three of those time slots – at 5 a.m., 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. This time around, the ABC affiliate’s only outright win was at 4:30 a.m.

Middays, KXAN and KVUE are essentially tied.

Also worth noting:

  • ABC’s “Good Morning America” is the network morning show of choice in Central Texas, followed by NBC’s “Today.” Meanwhile, the audience for “CBS This Morning” continues to grow, with the broadcast posting some of its strongest numbers in recent memory.
  • “NBC Nightly News” rules the 5:30 p.m. time slot, followed by “ABC World News” and then “CBS Evening News.”
  • At 9 p.m., KTBC’s newscast leads KNVA’s broadcast, but the gap is narrowing.
  • NBC is the top-rated network in primetime in Austin, followed by ABC, CBS, Fox, The CW and MyNetworkTV.

July is one of four “sweeps” periods each year. The others are February, May and November. Ratings during these months are used to set advertising rates.
